Inspired by the "title"match at Mt. Carmel
Oh El, Eloah, Elohim
we danced around our alters for hours on end
we mutilated our bodies and sacrificed to the gods we held high above You
we turned our backs on the One True God
we called out to our idols
but our cries simply echoed off the stone alters we built
no answer came
but you Yahweh Elohim are the One True God
and in an instant You heard the cry of a righteous man
You Eloah- a God to be feared
reminded Your people who You are
Fire came down from heaven
an answer to the cry to show Your might
I fall prostrate before You God of gods, Lord of lords
You destroy our idols before our eyes
You redeem us in a moment
i praise you El Elohim

ache
My heart hurts
the desires are overwhelming me
it takes my breath away
oxygen fights to fill my lungs
I feel like I will barely make it through the day
And yet I will
but to face the same battle tomorrow
It is the hardest thing to know
to be passively rejected
repeatedly its crushing
Its hard not to ask the question
what is wrong with me?
I know that is not what I am suppose to ask
and denials will arise
But underneath the surface
there it lies
Ache
God don’t let me settle for a bandaid
the desires are overwhelming me
it takes my breath away
oxygen fights to fill my lungs
I feel like I will barely make it through the day
And yet I will
but to face the same battle tomorrow
It is the hardest thing to know
to be passively rejected
repeatedly its crushing
Its hard not to ask the question
what is wrong with me?
I know that is not what I am suppose to ask
and denials will arise
But underneath the surface
there it lies
Ache
God don’t let me settle for a bandaid

Disappear
The loud music is starting again. The craving always begins so slowly-creeping in to my existence. And then like a great wave the darkness crowds around me, enveloping every sense and emotion.
Truth sloshes around in my heart, trying to get my attention. Reminding me that my present reality is not reality at all. But I don’t want to appease my heart right now. I want to scream along with the chaotic beats in my head.
The black oblivion has a sweet taste. To disappear, to stop trying to be what is right, to stop seeing and feeling the blood stained world all around me-the temptation is haunting. But the marrow of my heart begs me to reconsider, to think of the peace and contentment I was told existed out here somewhere.
Life twists and turns around me, through me, with me. There are highs and lows, the mountains and valleys and all the flat ground in between. Moments flying by in a rush to be and then be gone forever, an endless race towards the future.
This place where I now find mental rest feels like a very thin line between two worlds. I wonder how long I will be able to stay within the boundaries of no man’s land without falling over the edge.
The real problem is the inability to change where I am. To change the daily fabric of my life. It is not terrible my life, it is actually quite good. The Pandora that is me, now exists because I am more like me than I have ever been and yet still too far away from who I was made to be.

Random
The words come slowly these days. Perhaps it is because I feel their mundane repetition will be a bore. A broken record that no one, not even me, really wants to hear.
The steady heart beat of life moves rhythmically onward. Regardless of my desire to speed it up, push the rewind button or all out bail. It would seem this train is on a track moving forward and there is simply no going back. The spiritual bruises I have been acquiring lately make me feel like a three year old learning to ride a bike. I have band aides all over.

Torment Within
The swell of confusion and emotion
to cry, to sing, to shout for joy.
oh God do I ask too much?
Do my blind eyes fail to see the blessing
pouring from above,
Or am I just not seeing the joy
that is before me?
Have I turned my eyes away from what is so clearly there,
boxing in the most High God,
Have I put the boundaries of my finite mind
on the landscape of my life?
Oh God I seek You,
your Will,
your Way.
Why is it so difficult to see how You desire me to go?
Is it faith I lack?
Do I not realize the providence of Your presence in my life,
these burdens I carry reek of worldly claim
for they are not from you.
but how do I lose these chains that are drowning me?

in the fire
Friendship is a weird thing. Great friends share life together; the hurts, the joys, the laughter, the tears. It can be the only constant our life may have. That person or persons with whom we can be our most true self. But friendship is ever changing too. Sometimes without warning. Our interests no longer coincide, our lives take different directions or we simply make new friends, better friends and move on. The intimacy once shared is tucked into a memory box and forgotten.
It is a glorious gift from the Lord, people to walk through this world with. But I think it is the hardest thing too. To love and let go, to be never given a promise of an outcome. To never really be sure if the ones you love the most, whom you have let in to the out of reach places of your soul, will be the ones to hurt you the deepest. In a way that seems inevitable. We can only be really hurt in the heart if we have let someone in it. And real friendship only exists if we do. This glorious gift from above seems not only intended for the pleasures that friendship affords, but to refine us in the process of sharing life as well.
My prayer for a while now has settled on the refinement of who I am. That the Lord would move my life in such a way that I would be sanctified and be more like Him. It is not always an easy prayer to pray. Being refined is like metal in the fire. The heat is on as He shapes me over the flames of this life and the people He has surrounded me with. All of it to seemingly challenge my comfortable place in this world and the comfortable me I have too long been contented to be.
I have sometimes wondered why I maintain friendships I have felt to be long existing in shallow water. There have been moments of drifting away from shore, but we always seem to find ourselves able to touch again, back where it is safe. I have wondered why sometimes those who I should know best we knowingly maintain such a safe distance from depth, for years on end. Is it possible to really love someone but not really know them? Is it possible to look into some one's eyes and know what they are thinking, but we don't know and share how we came to be this guilt stained God cleansed person standing in front of each other? I don't know, maybe.
Then sometimes I think it is that love that keeps us from going too far in. What if the person inside is not who we profess to be? Is it safe enough to be real and unguarded? Is it safe enough to trust that they will handle me with care and not get cut on my broken pieces?
Recently a friend exposed a fault of mine. It was indirectly honest, there was no intent for me to be made aware of it, but I am and like most truth it hurts. I don't think I necessarily disagree either. Which of course makes it all worse. To have a flaw so brutally exposed, my pride so dented and damaged. As a little time has passed it is with some perspective I can write these words, with some degree of un-bias I know that indeed I am being refined.
It is, however, a funny and maybe slightly tragic, study of the human heart to replay the thoughts that cascaded through me in the moment of exposure. I wondered if this friendship was worth fighting for. Could somebody feel that way about me and really care? After all the disagreements we have had, all the times we have annoyed each other. After all the time we have spent so far from from the deep end. Should I just walk away?
But then I remembered the laughter, the joy, the elements that make this friendship great. I remembered my prayer to be refined, and that God does not promise it won't hurt to become more like Him. I remembered Grace, and that it thankfully covers us all. But mostly, as I thought of giving up the fight-I remembered that the people we love are worth fighting for and that I would rather be over the fire than sitting on the shore.

My favorite quote so far this year
by Anselm, an eleventh-century English monk
"I do not seek, O Lord, to penetrate thy depths. I by no means think my intellect equal to them: but I long to understand in some degree thy truth, which my heart believes and loves. For I do not seek to understand that I may believe, but I believe, that I may understand."
My Psalm 130 March 08
Amidst my anguish Lord
I cry to You, Hear me Lord
I beg You oh Lord
Have mercy on me.
I praise You Lord
for there are no records with You
Your forgiveness is powerful.
I dig my heals in Lord
I wait for you,
my hope rests in You.
My soul cries out for You
it waits for You
as a child restlessly waits for her Mother.
Oh friend, put your hope in the Lord
His unfailing love, His all powerful redemption.
He alone can redeem you and me
from ourselves.
My Psalm 127 March 08
It is by the hand of the Lord alone that my life is blessed.
Were it not for the protection of my God
my life would be in constant peril.
In vain I pursue my wants, I chase my desires in vain
I seek to take on the weight of the world
But the Lord gives rest to those He loves.
Fruit is a heritage of the Lord's blessings,
a reward from Him
like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are those whom God has surrounded His mercies.
Blessed are those who God protects
they will not be put to shame.
when they contend with their enemies at the gate.
My Psalm 126 Feb 08
The moment of truth revealed,
the victory won, God's faithfulness
is remembered with dreamlike elegance.
I laughed, I cried, I danced
in celebration of my hope restored
those who could see
exclaimed the wonder of God.
God is wonderful to me,
I am His joyous child.
Oh Lord, hear my cry
fill my heart with your sweet rain,
to nourish my drought-stricken soul.
Lord let it be that although
I have moved forward in despair
A song of celebration would leave my lips.
Let it be that this heavy heart,
this burdened soul,
would laugh, would sing
would celebrate Your blessings.
My Psalm 121-January 08
I see before me the trials of the day
Overwhelmed by their impossibilities
The Lord holds my hand, holds me close
He made all there is and ever will be
He does not let me fall, He never rests a moment
He who watches over His kingdom and His people
He does not sleep
The Lord watches over me
He protects and shields me
The elements of this world have no power over me
The Lord watches over me
He protects and shields me
He guards my life, He knows every path I take
both now and forever more.
My Psalm 120- January 08
Lord I call to you in times of distress,
worry and fear
Save me, oh Lord-from lying lips,
deceitful tongues,
Give me wisdom oh Lord,
to hear the truth, speak the truth, live the truth
What will He do to you oh deceitful tongue?
What will He do to you?
He will punish you with a warrior's arrow,
with conviction and passion
Lord it is hard to live in Seattle
To be surrounded by such disdain for You
I have lived among those who hate you
and hate peace for so long
Lord let me be a women of peace

Hello Senator Cantwell
This was a letter I wrote a while back to our very own Senator Cantwell, protesting an amendment. I never received a response, and I believe she did vote in favor of the bill. I thought it would be fun to share with all of you out there!
July 17, 2007
Hello Senator Cantwell,
I am writing to you because I am highly concerned with the U.S Senate Amendment number 2067. Attaching an amendment like this to the Defense Authorization bill makes it appear that the party sponsoring this bill is trying to sneak this legislation past the U.S. public. Are the creators of this bill and the people voting for this legislation afraid of how the voters will react if they knew the truth of what was happening in Congress?
Part of my concern is the basic understanding of hate-crimes in general. We must distinguish between acts of violence and words and opinions. It is my right, and the right of every individual who is a citizen of the United States to hold whatever opinion we want, and say whatever we want, regardless of whether or not anyone else agrees or disagrees. This road we are going down will inevitably lead to the loss of our right to be free of religious persecution and the loss of freedom of speech (as it already has in countless countries around the world, including Canada and Australia.)
I am very concerned that my senators would support special rights for certain individuals, above the rights of all citizens. The 14th Amendment already guarantees equal protection under the law. Does this proposed special "class" of people need and deserve more protection than I do? Amendment 2067 says that this special "class status" group, (who are already protected as citizen's of the United States,) have more rights and they are more important than me and my rights to religious freedom AND freedom of speech, the basic principles that our great country was founded on.
If the loss of our freedom does not create great concern for you, as it does for me, then I must question your understanding of our constitution and your loyalty to the citizens of the United States of America.
If you vote to pass this amendment then you are voting against me, citizen of the United States of America, resident of Washington State.

For His Glory
Tonight I was driving home from campaigners and this is what I heard.
"Melissa if you never share who you were before you knew Christ then the world will not be able to see God's Glory in you."
Bam. Ouch. Yikes, what exactly are you asking of me Lord?
To preface this I should tell you about church today. Today we watched a bio on Johnny Cash. Slightly odd, but each week we have watched a little video on someone in history as their struggle relates to the text we are studying. When Johnny came to know Christ he did not try to hide his sins and his imperfections. With Johnny we witnessed a man who shared his junk with the world. Instead of hiding behind shame and pride, his life before he knew Christ was used to show that God can work miracles, He can change us and even the greatest rebels can be made new in Him.
It seems that God is asking me to trust Him with my reputation. He is asking me to follow where He wants me to go. He is asking me to trust Him completely. It almost seems silly that this is a struggle. If only my head and heart would connect. If only my pride would vanish. If only I were more like Him.

A Wellspring of Tears
I go home every year for Memorial Day. It is tradition. All of Acme converges onto one spot to commemorate those soldiers who have gone before us, and of course to stand by the graves of our loved ones buried there. My Father is one of the proud men who marches with his fellow American Legionnaires in what is undoubtedly the shortest Memorial Day service in existence. Its a good four minutes long. But, its tradition. The young, the old and everyone in between can be found in one place at 11am, for those four sweet minutes.
This year I was home for the long weekend, not just the day. There is a lot to do at home this time of year. It is the beginning of the camping season so there is grass to mow, brush to cut, wood to stack, weeds to pull and of course the cemetary to prepare. I have a few beloveds there, and my Mom always makes sure they are well looked after. This year I went with her, and I am so thankful that I did.
If you know me at all reader, then you know that I have many tears inside of me. But I have come to realize that most of those are not really mine. I cry in support of another crier, I feel deep empathy for those I hear, see or read of having pain in their lives-and I cry for them. It is simply something I have no control over, and when I do try to fight those tears back it is to no avail. I have cried for me before-obviously. Those moments seem to be when something very raw is exposed, when God prompts someone to keep asking me, despite my resistance. Then they must patiently wait while I find the courage to answer in truth.
God has recently challenged this inablity to be transparent and to openly share who I am with even my close friends. He has opened my eyes to the pride that keeps me from sharing my sin. He has opened my eyes to how I hurt others by not trusting them as they have earned. And He has showed me how I have wasted what could have been precious moments of friendship and instead I have hidden behind a wall of fear. As I seek to understand how I am to go forward I know that I need to look back as well, and allow the Lord to heal the little girl who put up the walls in the first place.
In preperation for Memorial Day Mom and I arrived at the cemetary loaded with garden tools and flowers. We pulled weeds, we put in new soil, pruned a tree or two, and planted flowers to honor those buried there. Grandpa, little cousin Kaitlyn, and Auntie Kaye. All three taken home, and away from us, within a year of each other.
Auntie Kaye was my Mom's identical twin. She died of cancer when they were 39 years old. I was in 6th grade. It happened very quickly. Three months. I don't remember a lot from that time. I remember going to the hospital to see Auntie Kaye one day like normal. Then Tiffany(my sister) and I went to my Uncle Rick and Aunt Kathy's house and Mom went back to the hospital. When she came to get us one look at my Mom's face and I knew, Auntie Kaye was gone. I don't know if my parents sat us down and talked about death. I believed she was in heaven, but I don't remember really fully understanding. I know I cried, I knew things had changed forever and that my childhood innocence had been shaken to the core.
That afternoon up at the cemetary I saw a glimpse of the pain and suffering that my Mom had protected me from. I don't know if the protection was intentional, maybe it was survival. I can imagine that her sorrow was so great that there was many times she was afraid if she shared her tears with us, if she shared her pain she would not be able to stop those tears from falling. I feel that way sometimes too. This day my Mom shared with me that after Auntie Kaye died she would come up to this silent place and care for the sacred ground where my Aunt was buried. There were times when she would find bird poop on the gravestone and she would scrub it off while she yelled and screamed at the birds. Shouting at them "how dare you touch Kaye's stone, how dare you!" Crying and falling to her knees, angry that those birds did not realize they were out of bounds, that this place was off limits. I think this was her way of yelling at God.
My heart broke for my Mom. As children we are only interested in what is directly impacting us. I was no different. I don't remember wondering about how my Mom must have been feeling during this time. I don't remember being "extra good" to help her out. We all just shut down, and shut out the pain, and with that the emotional connection we had to each other.
Mom and I cleaned off the bird poop on the stones together. Then we went home. I have a feeling that the Lord is starting to break down the walls I built so many years ago.
